Kashmir Freedom Movement Urges UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to Address Escalating Human Rights Concerns at G20 Summit

London, [14th August 2023] – In a heartfelt plea, the Kashmir Freedom Movement (KFM) has reached out to UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, raising urgent concerns regarding the escalating human rights violations in the State of Jammu and Kashmir. Mr. Ghulam Hussain, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Board at KFM, has conveyed the apprehensions of the British Kashmiri Diaspora Community in a letter, calling upon the Prime Minister to play a leading role in addressing the pressing issue of the Jammu and Kashmir conflict.

The British Kashmiri Diaspora Community, echoing the sentiments of numerous concerned individuals and groups globally, is profoundly disturbed by the continuous stream of reports detailing human rights abuses and violations in the region. The fundamental Right to Development of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, including their cherished right to self-determination, has been grievously eroded by the ongoing conflict. This state of affairs not only perpetuates the suffering among the local populace but also casts a looming shadow of instability upon peace and security in the wider region.

As a distinguished member of both the G20 and the United Nations Security Council, the United Kingdom finds itself in a position of influence to catalyze dialogue and facilitate a peaceful resolution to the Jammu and Kashmir conflict. Mr Hussain and the KFM earnestly request Prime Minister Sunak to leverage his forthcoming participation in the 18th G20 Heads of State and Government Summit in New Delhi to address these mounting concerns and champion a peaceful solution that upholds the inalienable human rights of all individuals within the region.

The British Kashmiri Diaspora Community firmly asserts that a resolution to this enduring conflict is indispensable not only for the people of Jammu and Kashmir but also for nurturing harmony and understanding within the diverse communities of the United Kingdom. It is recognized that human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir can foment community tensions within England, underscoring the urgency of a collective response to these issues.

In consideration of the above, the KFM humbly presents the following appeals on behalf of the Jammu and Kashmir Diaspora:

  1. Raise the Issue: Urging Prime Minister Sunak to employ his presence at the G20 Summit to candidly address and highlight concerns about the human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir, emphasizing the crucial need for a peaceful resolution.
  2. Champion the Right to Development: Encouraging Prime Minister Sunak to advocate for the restoration of the Right to Development for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, encompassing their rightful claim to self-determination.
  3. Promote Peace and Security: Calling on the international community to rally behind initiatives that nurture peace, stability, and security within the region.
  4. Dialogue and Mediation: Utilizing his influential role to promote dialogue and peaceful mediation among all stakeholders embroiled in the conflict.

Mr. Hussain and the KFM are confident that Prime Minister Sunak’s leadership and advocacy will play a pivotal role in realizing a just and enduring solution to the Jammu and Kashmir conflict. Such efforts will not only alleviate the plight of the region’s populace but also elevate the United Kingdom’s reputation as a steadfast proponent of human rights and global harmony.

The Kashmir Freedom Movement extends its gratitude to Prime Minister Sunak for his attentiveness to this pressing matter and remains optimistic that his representation at the G20 Summit will mark a significant stride toward resolving the Jammu and Kashmir conflict.
